R.I.P. Merle

Yet another musical legend has passed on. Country legend Merle Haggard has died today aged 79. One of the original Country Outlaws Merle along with Willie Nelson shook up country music whilst still being credible. For many, many years he made countless albums, singing his own songs and covering many more. Here are just a few.

Music Box from Reporter Newspaper 1992

Going through some old paperwork from the old shop and found a bunch of old newspapers. Back in The Trading Post days we supplied charts for The Mansfield Reporter and also a CD each week as a competition prize. I have posted a couple on the Facebook page but thought it might be interesting to take a deeper look into them. Interesting single at number two in this first one RAF "We've got to live together" a big seller on CD & 12" vinyl, must have been played down at the clubs in Mansfield. And at 9 is a typical rave tune of the day Skin Up with "A juicy red apple" . In the album chart is typical Diskits seller from Love Hate "Wasted in America"

The second post shows charts from 9th of April 1992 and we offered the Annie Lennox CD "Diva" as the competition prize. The album chart featured what would become Diskits regular selling artists Mr Big and Twisted Sister, along with Def Leppard  at number one with "Adrenalize" and Alien Sex Fiend at number 7 this shows that as regards albums, Sutton "ROCKED"

The number one single that week was Mr Bean featuring Bruce Dickinson and a cover version of Alice Cooper's "Elected" this was that years Comic Relief single.  But also in the chart were a couple of huge selling 12" rave tracks "Injected with a poison" by Praga Khan & "Evapor8" by Altern8

There will more to follow.
