Once again this year I will be going to The Gate to Southwell Folk Festival , already starting to look a good line up with more to follow. A nice mix of traditional folk, and bands and singers from around the globe. Here are a few samples of what's on.
We Banjo 3 Award-winning quartet We Banjo 3 are from Galway and combine Irish Music with Old-Time American and Bluegrass influences to reveal the banjo’s rich legacy and roots.
The Railsplitters From their home in the Colorado Rockies, The Railsplitters have been scaling new heights with a refreshing and charming range of bluegrass. Bringing real depth and formidable talent, with rapid tempos, unusual instrumentals and good-time breakdowns!
The Young 'uns The Teesside trio – Sean Cooney, Michael Hughes and David Eagle – are an unlikely force of nature on stage, beguiling audiences with irrepressible humour, bold vocals, gripping storylines and innate musicality.
Flossie Malavialle became involved in the English folk scene whilst teaching in the North East. Her repertoire includes famous numbers, including Allan Taylor’s “Roll on the day”, Kieran Halpin’s “Making up the miles”, Colum Sands’ “The child who asks why”, Starrett and Laird’s ” John Condon” but also Edith Piaf’s eternal favourites “No regrets”, “La vie en rose”… or Jacques Brel’s “Amsterdam” and “Ne me quitte pas”.
The Urban Folk Quartet Made up of Joe Broughton, Paloma Trigás, Tom Chapman and Dan Walsh four highly accomplished musicians, a dozen instruments and four voices come together to craft a knockout show of globally–influenced, electrifying acoustic music.
Martin Simpson, Andy Cutting & Nancy Kerr Comprising three of Britain’s finest musicians and interpreters of songs and tunes, each member of this trio is an acknowledged virtuoso in their own right.
There will of course be many more added to the line up many playing more than once over the three main days. For anyone who likes folk or roots music it is a most friendly festival, very well organised and easy to get to. Always plenty of food and refreshment stalls and lot's of other stuff going on around the site and in Southwell itself, usually including artists performing in Southwell Minster. Well worth popping in.
As I mentioned I am currently cataloging my singles and will finish off with a few more that I have recently listed, still only up to B, it's a long slow job, that will keep me busy for a good while yet, but great to revisit some old favourites.
Will get some more listed later this coming week.
